Position: Mental Health First Aid Project Director

What does our mission statement,
Happy Wear Blue Week! Name: Curtis Position: Mental Health First Aid Project Director What does our mission statement, "strengthening families and protecting children" mean to you?: Many have heard the phrase that it takes a village to raise a child, I also believe that it takes a village to strengthen a family which strengthens a village. We are empowering and providing support to our "village" through the services provided at The Family Place. EVERYTHING we do revolves around our mission statement and I am blessed to be able to participate in strengthening families through promoting awareness of mental health and reducing mental health stigma while instructing Mental Health First Aid classes. When we work together as a community to learn, grow, and increase our skills, we are prepared to provide support to our families and community. These efforts will strengthen our "village", they will strengthen our families, they will protect our children. What do you enjoy most about working at The Family Place?: What I most enjoy about working at The Family Place is the feeling of being a part of something bigger than myself. I also feel like I can make a difference in the lives of people in this community, especially through my position with Mental Health First Aid. When I think about the fact that approximately 1 in 5 have a diagnosable mental health illness I am filled with a desire to help. I know that it is "uncomfortable" to talk about difficult subjects like mental health, but avoidance is not helping. We need to become more comfortable openly talking about what naturally feels "uncomfortable". By openly talking about these topics, having a desire to understand and helping someone in need we can make a difference to someone. That someone can be our friend, our neighbor, our family, our child, or even ourselves. #thefamilyplace #capmonth

What does our mission statement,
Happy Wear Blue Week! Every day this week we will highlight one of our amazing staff members. Make sure you post and tag us so we can share your photos. 💙 Name: MaKayla Position: Receptionist What does our mission statement, "strengthening families and protecting children" mean to you?: "There is a story that we love to share here at The Family Place. It is about a little boy who has been working very hard to save some starfish that have washed up on a beach. Although someone points out that he will never make a difference as there are thousands of starfish that need to be saved; the little boy continues to throw them back into the water commenting that his efforts 'make a difference to that one.' Some may look at the work that we do here just as critically. I believe our mission statement 'strengthening families and protecting children,' represents the lofty and incredibly important goal we have here at The Family Place. In one way or another, every family needs strengthened and every child needs protecting. Both here in Cache Valley and across the world. Just as the little boy’s task was daunting, so is our work here. However, I stand behind the belief that every effort we make here can 'make a difference for that one'." What do you enjoy most about working at The Family Place?: "No two days are the same when working here at The Family Place. As the receptionist, I never know what situation will walk through the door, or who will be on the other side of a phone call. One day I may get the opportunity to accept a donation of blankets from young children, who are excited that their warm creation will help another child. Another day I may end up sitting with a crying mother who is in desperate need of help for her child. I get to hand out diapers, blankets, hygiene kits and more to those in need. If someone comes to us in crisis, I may not have all the answers, but I do know how to get them help. For me it all about helping the people that we serve. They are why I love working here!" #thefamilyplace #blueweek #CAPMonth
