Why is it important to have boundaries?
Boundaries are essential to creating a healthy life, and setting and keeping them are a
skill. Without them you may begin to feel depleted, taken advantage of, or taken for
granted, which can lead to resentment, hurt, anger, burnout, compassion fatigue, or
secondary trauma. Boundaries help you to draw clear lines, make it easier to say no,
protect your peace, keep you from getting too overwhelmed, and help with difficult
relationships with family and friends. Clear and established boundaries help you take
care of yourself in all dimensions of wellness and ultimately become more comfortable
and positive with your view of yourself.


How can I assess them?
Ask yourself, “What are my boundaries and are they helping to take care of my needs?”
If yes, that is wonderful, continue to use those boundaries and adjust when needed in
the future. If not, ask yourself “What areas in my life do I feel are suffering?” then work
to build realistic boundaries to strengthen those areas. It is important to remember to
be honest while building those boundaries, they could be for a personal relationship,
with work, or even with yourself.
