What is it, and why is it important? Mental Health First Aid is a course that instructs community members how to understand, identify, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. It provides adults with the opportunity to learn how to make a difference for someone experiencing a mental health related crisis. In this training, they learn about:

Risk factors
Warning signs for mental health and addiction
Strategies to help an individual experiencing both crisis and non-crisis situations
Where to go for help
ALGEE steps
– Assess for risk of suicide or harm; Listen nonjudgmentally; Give reassurance and information; Encourage appropriate professional help; Encourage self-help and other support strategies.

Just as it is important to help someone who is having a heart attack, it is important to know what to do for someone having a mental health or substance use challenge or crisis.

Being trained provides individuals with the opportunity to know what to do in situations where an individual is experiencing a mental health or substance abuse crisis.. Training helps us give the care and attention to members of our community who are experiencing these difficult situations.

The Family Place understands the need and importance for this type of training. Now more than ever, people are experiencing and recognizing mental illness. Like physical illness, mental illness is a health concern that should be treated seriously. The Family Place seeks to be a part of the solution.

Most people don’t think about first aid as a type of training for mental health. It is common to get training to notice heart attacks, strokes, and seizures. It is also common to get training to know what to do in these situations; at the very least, we would know to call 911. Over 2 million people have been trained in mental health in the United States. While this number seems large, it is actually less than 1% of the population. When it comes to mental health, there are very few people who know how to respond.. Frequently, when we think we might be noticing, or even experiencing, the signs associated with a mental illness, we think we are overexaggerating. We believe that we are interfering with someone’s life, and that the problem isn’t actually a big deal. It is definitely a big deal.

One of the most important steps of staying mentally healthy is asking for help when you need it. Mental Health First Aid makes sure that there are people available to guide those who need help to the best resources for them.

Our mission is to strengthen families and protect children. We know that taking care of a family can sometimes be stressful. Being physically healthy is so important in being a parent and taking care of children. It is also important to take care of ourselves mentally. Taking Mental Health First Aid will allow you to understand mental health challenges, and recognize when members of your family or others around you may need to seek help for their mental well-being. Mental health is a vital part of overall health. In alignment with our mission, knowing how to help your loved ones and others in your life who may struggle with mental illness now or in the future will establish healthier family relationships and strengthen them.
